Travelling with your pet can be fun for both of you if you prepare well. First, ask whether your pet will really enjoy it, or be happier at home with someone you trust. If so, see choosing boarding for your pet.

Before you go

  • An ID tag with your phone number on the collar, cats included.
  • If your pet gets carsick, ask your vet. Never give it human medicine.
  • Get a cat used to its carrier days before: leave it open at home with food inside.
  • Book somewhere that confirms in writing that it accepts pets, and on what terms.
  • Find the nearest vet at your destination before you need one.

Your pet's bag

  • Its usual food for the whole trip and then some, plus water and two bowls.
  • Leash and collar, and a muzzle for dogs.
  • Licence card and vaccination card, or photos of them.
  • A small litter tray and litter for cats.
  • Bags, wet wipes and a towel.
  • Any medicines it takes.

In the car

  • Cats travel in a carrier held by a seatbelt; dogs in a crate or a harness clipped to the belt. No loose pets.
  • A light meal a few hours before you set off, not right before.
  • Stop every two or three hours for water and a toilet break, with your dog on the leash.
  • Don't let your dog ride with its head out of the window.

Public transport and ride-hailing

  • Rules differ between operators: ask before you book a train or coach.
  • With ride-hailing apps, tell the driver before pick-up that you have a pet in a carrier.
  • Keep cats and small dogs in a closed carrier the whole way.

At the coast

  • The law requires a muzzle and a leash for every dog outside the home, with a walker aged 18 or over. See walking your dog in Egypt.
  • Midday sun and beach sand burn paws. Walk early or after sunset, and always have shade and water.
  • New places make escapes easier: keep windows and doors shut and dogs on the leash.
