A dog is a big commitment of time and money, and the bigger the dog, the more it costs: more food, and medicines dosed by weight. Do the maths before you decide.

Puppies need several doses in their first year, then boosters as your vet advises. See vet and vaccine prices.

Food

The biggest monthly cost. A large (18 kg) bag of imported food has multiplied in price in recent years and now costs over EGP 5,000, while local brands have become common and cheaper. To estimate: bag price ÷ the number of days it lasts. Ask your vet which food suits your dog's age and size.

Other costs

  • One-off: bed or crate, bowls, collar and leash, a muzzle (required outside), toys.
  • Worm, flea and tick prevention: as your vet plans it. Ticks are common in Egypt, especially in summer.
  • Training, grooming, boarding when you travel, or a dog walker, as you need them. See choosing boarding for your pet.
  • An emergency reserve: surgery or a clinic stay can cost many times a consultation.

Saving without cutting corners

  • Adopting, or choosing a baladi dog, saves the purchase price, and baladi dogs are used to Egypt's climate.
  • Vaccines and prevention on time cost far less than treating disease.
  • License on time: fines start at EGP 10,000.
  • Compare prices, but never buy a vaccine or medicine from a source you can't trust.
